    Crucial materials science challenge solved.
Peter Oppeneer and colleagues have explained the hitherto unsolved mystery in materials science known as 'the hidden order' - how a new phase arises and why. This discovery can be of great importance to our understanding of how new material properties occur, how they can be controlled and exploited in the future. They have performed large-scale computer calculations, to a large extent on NSC resources, to show how the 'hidden order' emerges. Their work is published in Nature Materials.

The installation begins in May in our old computer building, and a part of the resource will be available for academic users starting from July-August, 2007. When our new computer building is ready in September we can accept the remaining, major part of the system and be in full operation starting from November. The resource is financed by SNIC (Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing) at the Swedish Research Council. Read the press release (in Swedish) for further information.

Supercomputer improves the forecasts for climate changes
With improved access to supercomputers, climate researchers can produce better forecasts for how the climate is effected by human activities. Researchers at Stockholm University, KTH and SMHI are given this opportunity through a grant of 25.4 MSEK for a new climate computer.

New application software at NSC:
NSC provides the general ab initio quantum chemistry program Gamess-UK 7.0 on SweGrid. The program is made available for a period of one year, after which we will consider prolonging the licence based on the experience of our users. We therefore encourage use of the program with feedback.
For detailed information on how to run the program, see

NSC receives 35 MSEK for a new capability high performance computer resource.
The support is provided by the Swedish Research Council via Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC). "This will place NSC among the top European supercomputer centers and will serve Swedish researchers with a computer approximately 3 times as powerful as the present top level national system. The new resource will be available starting from spring 2007" says Sven Stafström, director of NSC.

Mozart provides insight to relativistic effects on molecular spectra.
The large memory on Mozart enables quantum chemical calculations of molecular spectra with accurate treatment of relativity, and the inclusion of third-row elements in pi-conjugated systems is shown to make the multi-photon (but not single-photon) absorption broad banded.

    CERN's Service Challenge 4
NSC is currently participating in Service Challenge 4, a ramp-up exercise for the data-taking from CERN's new accelerator, LHC. The goal of the currently ongoing throughput tests is to demonstrate how data can be moved from CERN to a number of sites world-wide, at an aggregate bandwidth of 1.6 gigabytes per second. NSC is representing the Nordic region in Service Challenge 4, together with PDC in Stockholm, HPC2N in Umeå and NBI in Copenhagen.

New shared memory system at NSC.
A new computer system with Swedens largest shared memory, half a terabyte, is now being installed at the National Supercomputer Centre (NSC), at Linköping University. The hardware in the new system consists of a SGI Altix 3700 Bx2 with 64 Intel Itanium 2 processors and 512 GB of memory. The system is financed by the Swedish Research Council via the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC).
