The HPC Technology Roadmap: Status Report 2 (April 10, 2001)
The background and strategy of the study was described in the previous
status report. In short, our approach is to perform this study by means
of interviews of most major vendors of HPC systems. The interviews will
focus on future investments of HPC systems at a fictive large HPC centre.
We have recieved a positive response to this approach from several of the
vendors, which has encouraged us to pursue the study along those lines.
NSC has made contacts with all major vendors (Cray, Compaq, Fujitsu,
Hitachi, HP, IBM, NEC, sgi, and Sun) of HPC systems in order to conduct
the interviews. Responses have been recieved from 6 vendors, and contact
persons responsible for the actual interviews have been assigned by 4 of
the vendors. We are still awaiting responses from 3 vendors. Questions
relevant as user input for the interviews have been distributed with the
Grid Service Requirements questionnaire. The results from the questionnaire
are of vital importance for the forthcoming interviews. An interview "template"
to be followed during the interviews is under development. This template
will be distributed to the vendors before the interviews, in order to allow
for preparation.
A home page for the HPC Technology Roadmap study will be set up at http://www.nsc.liu.se/rd/enacts
as soon as possible. Information will be added gradually.
