Project informationAs a part of the EU funded project ENACTS (European Network for Advanced Computing Technology for Science), NSC (National Supercomputer Centre) in Sweden, in collaboration with CSCISM (Center for High Performance Computing in Molecular Sciences) in Italy is performing a technology study, "The HPC Technology Roadmap". The objective of the study is to determine the technological and economical trends which will prescribe the hardware architectures of HPC systems 2006-2011 and to evaluate the effects this will have on applications software.The ENACTS program runs over a 4 year period, is coordinated by EPCC in Edinburgh, and involves 14 different centers from 13 different countries. Together the centers are providing access to over 500 European researchers. Further information on the program can be found at http://www.enacts.org. Instead of performing a traditional survey and evaluation of the development of various components that comprises a HPC system we will look at the projected user demands that European HPC centers will have to meet in the future. To do this we will conduct interviews and discussions with key HPC technology providers focused around an investment in a large HPC system at a fictive HPC center aiming at providing resources satisfying the user demands 2006-2011. Invitations to participate has been submitted to a handful of leading HPC vendors. To provide a platform and starting point for the discussions we will specify user demand scenarios in the context of a fictive procurement. The discussions will thus be based on how each company sees the future development of HPC technology (components and systems) in view of these demands. The discussions will not deal with specific details of systems currently being planned, but instead target the long term general development of HPC, thus avoiding any potential conflict with proprietary non-disclosure information. The result from the project will be analyzed and disseminated to all European HPC centers as well as made available on the web. We believe that this approach will make the task interesting and concrete, and also facilitate a mutually beneficial exchange of information between the companies and our user base. We believe that the results will be directly applicable to European and other HPC centers. This technology study is one of the first steps within the ENACTS program and will serve as a base for the continued work.
