TRACS provides visiting European researchers with access to some of the most powerful High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities in Europe. EPCC is a National Computing Centre and offers services on a range of advanced facilities, including a Cray T3E, a Cray J90, a cluster of Sun HPC and Sun Fire 6800 systems and a Beowulf cluster. Networked resources within the Centre include facilities for visualisation work.
The next visitor selection meeting will take place in September 2001. Applications for this meeting must be received by 22 August 2001, using the on-line application form at http://www.epcc.ed.ac.uk/tracs/ .
Successful applicants will come for a visit of between one and three months, during the period from October 2001 to April 2002. Visitors will work on their current research project while in Edinburgh, benefiting from scientific input from researchers in an appropriate `host' department in one of Edinburgh's three universities (Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt and Napier) or an associated research institute. Visitors are encouraged to identify a suitable host department before applying if possible. In addition to free (optional) training as part of EPCC's MSc in HPC and consultancy from experienced EPCC staff, TRACS reimburses travel costs and provides subsistence expenses and accommodation in shared flats.
Applications are welcomed from European academic or industrial researchers, from postgraduate level to well-established scientists, in any discipline to which access to HPC facilities is beneficial. Applicants must be working within a research group based in an eligible country.
Eligible countries are all EU member states plus Bulgaria, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.
The selection panel approves applications on the basis of scientific merit. The acceptance rate for the past 12 months stands at over 80%. Researchers who do not have access to similar HPC facilities are particularly encouraged to apply.
Please note that the Selection Panel meets four times per year, with closing dates for applications usually in February, May, August and November.
