Professor Bertil Gustafsson, Department of Scientific Computing, Uppsala
University,
will present a talk with the title
High Performance Computing today: Faster computers and faster algorithms
Theory and experiments are the two classical methods for getting new
insight into various problems in science and technology. Today there is a
third method: computer simulations. In research as well as industrial
design, this new method is becoming increasingly important. For large
problems, high performance computers are required. But this is not enough,
fast and reliable algorithms are also required.
In this talk we shall discuss current research in numerical analysis and
algorithm development. We shall also present numerical results from
different applications, such as fluid dynamics, acoustics and
electro-magnetic wave-propagation. The implications of modern parallel
computer architectures will also be discussed.
